His complexity of character serves to make him very nearly human, and his being swayed from any untoward ideas by love and kindness similarly paints him as perhaps the most human of the gods. Ultimately, the character of Hades generally stands as a blueprint to be filled in by the machinations of the modern writers and their perspectives. His falling in love with Persephone and their relationship's development is based not upon what society would like to see in a strong, masculine, Byronic hero, but on what a kind, the human individual would do if needed. This character feature is repeated in other adaptations such as Hades and Hadestown. Rather than showing him as being unfaithful to his wife like his brothers, he is instead portrayed as being at the end of a difficult relationship and blinded by his management of the underworld. Firstly, the modern retelling has Hades under a different set of expectations from those of Ancient Greece, meaning that his character must be defined outside those parameters. In Hadestown, loved by many Lore Olympus fans, Hades is similarly painted as a man who just got in over his head with ruling the underworld.īased on all of this information, then, Lore Olympus is a brilliant place to see much of the action of authorial intent and legendary adaptation in action. On the other hand, Hades' ambiguous motivations have allowed many to think that the god of the underworld isn't actually that bad of a guy. Given that most Western writers view the ruler of the underworld as a force of evil, it is relatively simple for narratives like Clash of the Titans and Disney's Herculesto pursue that interpretation. As most storytelling of Hades is done from a Western perspective, how he is portrayed reflects this influence. Part and parcel of that is the modern perspective that is offered on remaining the character. Given that Hades' motivations have been largely lost to history, modern writers are able to work with him from any angle they please.
